Summary:

The Genetic Counselor will provide genetic counseling services and support to patients referred to or seen in the Clinical and Metabolic Genetics Clinic. The GC acts as the primary case manager to assigned clinical and metabolic patients. The GC will support the providers in ordering genetic tests for assigned patients, along with related tasks such as working with the insurance specialist regarding benefits, writing letters of medical necessity, and arranging for specimen submission. The GC will provide support to the providers in researching abnormal lab results, initial notification to patients/families, and participation in genetic counseling regarding abnormal results. The GC will provide genetic information in response to requests from patients, families, referring providers, and others. The GC will work with providers, other clinical support staff, and front office staff with positive collaboration.

Education and Experience:

  • Masters level Genetic Counselor from a Board Certified Program

  • Minimum of two years relevant experience in a pediatric setting, preferred

  • Must exhibit strong counseling abilities; and competent clinical judgment skills; effective organizational/time management skills and appropriate communication skills

  • Ability to work independently

  • Fluency in both English and Spanish preferred


Certification/Licensure:

  • Current Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC) certification through the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) required
