The Histotech III performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s), according to policies and procedures. Works under direct supervision and follows standard procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks. This position requires the ability to fully understand all equipment, its maintenance, and their processes. Participates in continuing education/in-service training sessions sponsored by the department. Performs instrument and reagent validations and Staff training.
Responsibilities
- Performs routine histology including specimen processing, embedding, slide preparation, microtomy, staining, and immunohistochemistry on fixed and frozen biopsies.
- Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensures correct patient labeling. Correctly prepares special stains and solutions. Routinely checks and verifies that surgical case numbers of match blocks and slides; prints labels as appropriate.
- Records in laboratory logbooks all slides and stains prepared daily. Logs appropriate information into the surgical pathology computer system.
- Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment and troubleshoots minor equipment failures. Documents remedial actions such as repairs or repeated tests.
- Follows appropriate laboratory safety protocols.
- Examine slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation and stains meet requirements.
- Adheres to laboratory's quality control policies and documents all quality control activities.
- Performs instrument & reagent validations, as well as staff training.
- Ensures compliance with all local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
- Adheres to attendance and punctuality guidelines.
- Maintains a clean and organized work area.
