SUMMARY:

The Department of Counseling in the College of Education and Human Services at Texas A&M University-Commerce invites applicants to apply for a 9-month Department Head position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with half-time instructional responsibilities and appointment beginning Fall 2024 (if available could change start date to Spring 2024). The position is responsible for developing a productive and collaborative atmosphere, mentoring faculty, developing an effective shared governance system, working effectively with the college dean and senior administration, building excellence in curriculum and coursework, and scheduling in collaboration with the department faculty. The position will provide senior leadership to all the programs in the Department of Counseling including the Human Services undergraduate program, MED Student Affairs, and our CACREP approved MS in Clinical Mental Health, MS in School Counseling, and Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision. Candidates should be licensed, licensed eligible, or certified in their respective field of counseling.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works collaboratively with faculty to build a positive culture and effective structures, policies, and communications channels;
  • Serves as the chief advocate for advancing the mission of the Department of Counseling, the college, and the institution;
  • Assesses departmental performanceand determines critical requirements for program practices and documentation;
  • Leads best practice expectations for recruitment and retention of students, faculty success, alumni relations, securing and managing extramural funding, and other scholarly and fundraising initiatives;
  • Promotes and mentors the professional development of faculty within the department; encourages and supports attendance at professional conferences, grant writing, scholarship, professional consulting, and community engagement; mentors faculty to success in achieving tenure and promotion; maintains professional development and ongoing success of senior faculty;
  • Performs annual evaluations of faculty and staff; develops annual performance plans outlining accomplishments for the coming year; combines results of individual plans to produce an annual performance plan for the academic unit as a whole;
  • Ensures that departmental course offerings optimize resources and are offered in a timely manner with adequate student input to ensure the smooth flow of student progress toward graduation;
  • Exercises fiduciary responsibility on all departmental operating, special, and endowment accounts as well as fixed and consumable assets assigned to departmental programs; monitors dedicated scholarships closely and ensures that awards are made in a timely fashion;
  • Develops and improves departmental plans for curriculum development, review, and revision; utilizes course student assessments and input from faculty, program graduates, and external stakeholders/employers; utilizes results from these assessments to identify and respond to areas of greater demand and to seek out new areas of strength;
  • Oversees, in conjunction with program faculty and departmental staff, an effective and continuous student academic advising program for each academic program of study; monitors graduation rates and ensures compliance with any relevant Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board requirements particularly, where appropriate, state-mandated core curriculum learning goals; collaborates with departmental faculty to mentor new graduate students and ensure that any graduate assistants employed by the department, including those supported by extramural funds, receive appropriate training and mentoring to enable them to perform their job assignments professionally;
  • Serves as the primary liaison with the dean, graduate school, the registrar, and institutional effectiveness staff;
  • Oversees the assessment processes used for regional and national accreditation applicable to counseling programs such as CACREP and TEA and ensures compliance and completion of reporting.
  • Serves on select departmental, college and university committees;
  • Teach master's and doctoral level courses in counseling;
  • Maintain an active research agenda;
  • Advise students;

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education:Doctorate in Counseling or Counselor Education from a regionally accredited university
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills:academic background commensurate with the rank of associate or full professor. Proven records of the following: clinical counseling experience, higher education administrative experience, instruction and dissertation advising, and a commitment to shared governance and quality programs; strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a team of professionals; strong written and oral communication skills; commitment to high quality instruction; dedication to high standards and student success
  • Ability to:multitask and work collegially with faculty, staff, students, and community stakeholders; ability to work beyond normal office hours and work on weekends as needed; ability to travel as needed
  • Licensing/Professional Certifications:Licensed, Licensed Eligible, or Certified in respective field of counseling.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

  • Doctorate in Counseling or Counselor Education from CACREP-accredited program.
  • Experience teaching in CACREP-accredited program
  • Familiarity with CACREP standards;
  • Experience serving as accreditation reviewer and authoring self-study for CACREP
  • Leadership experience at the program and/or department head level
  • Extensive teaching and advising experience at graduate level
  • Demonstrated experience with budgeting; program design and implementation; securing external funding
  • Evidence of effective interaction with students, faculty, administration, and the community
  • Active participation in counseling professional organizations at national, regional, state and local levels.
  • Licensed as a Licensed Professional Counselor with a minimum of 2 years of experience or as a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S)
